Advancements of Higher Education of Viet Nam: a Look Back on CALOHEA

On 1st of July 2024, in the first working day of The Eight General Meeting of CALOHEA, we, the representatives of Vietnam higher education institutions in Civil Engineering, Medicine and Teacher Education, had a warm discussion to review our experience of the past 4-year journey with CALOHEA.

One of the important topics in our discussion is its impacts on the higher education system of Vietnam. CALOHEA seeked to establish the bridges between different qualification systems, which aligned closely with the need of internationalization of Vietnam higher education, especially in the settings of increasing globalization in education and student exchange. Furthermore, the established framework of competencies of CALOHEA provided a high-quality reference for each institution to review our institutional competency statements. We all have been on our way to make amendments to our programs to ensure that the programs are up-to-date and students are equipped with the necessary competencies to adapt and thrive in the dynamic and ever changing world.

Another important part in the CALOHEA project was about the definition and measurement of student workload. The process of working with CALOHEA helped us to explore the different preconceptions that we had about the issue and the varied approaches that we used to apply the concepts of CALOHEA into the workload measurement of our students. We realized that all tools need modifications to fit into each institutional setting. However, it is undeniable that CALOHEA raised the awareness and helped to turn student workload measurement into routine practice in our participating institution.

Finally, we developed many plans to expand the network and increase the influence of CALOHEA. We expect this will help to involve more stakeholders, to enhance the effectiveness of the projects and ensure the applicability and sustainability of the project in Vietnam.

We welcome all higher education institutions in Vietnam and the world to join the project!
