NUOL was established by amalgamation of the existing higher education institutions which then operated under different ministries. It comprised of 10 institutions namely: the Pedagogical University of Vientiane, Polytechnic University Medical Science University, Nabong Collage of Irrigation, Institute of Architecture, Institute of Transportation, Collage of Electricity and Electronics and the Centre for Transportation of Veunkham Agro-Forestry University. Initially, The NUOL conducted the teaching and learning-based activities starting with 7 faculties, 6 Offices and one school of Foundation Studies. After that Faculties, Institutes, Centers and campus hospital 1. Sathid Primary School and Sathid Secondary School were established. Currently, 2018-2019 the NUOL comprises 13 Faculties, 2 Institutes, 1 Centre Library, 3 Centers, 1 Hospital, 11 Offices and 1 School for Gift and Ethnic Students.
